Becoming a freelance isn't the most accessible route. But it's the dream of a lot of us. I love getting to the office when I please and plan my week as it fits in my life. Here are some tips on how to become a successful freelance:

Know if you have enough work and how much you need to survive

The first and most important thing to do is check that you will have enough clients to live on freelancing. A lot of companies don't foresee the lack of customers, and that makes them unsuccessful.

It's important to know how much you need to earn to be sustainable.

Be strict with your habits

Make sure you know how many hours you must work to be sustainable and stick on those. Don't start with habits of working too much or waking up at 12 pm. Be disciplined.

Sole trader or Limited company

Both of these options are as good. Make sure you understand which is more convenient four your businesses.

Make sure you have clients and savings

Having some savings is a good idea, it takes the pressure of not having enough work in the first few months. Also is a good practice to start lining up some clients and network a lot!

Insurance

Make sure you have insurance as the first few years are, and you don't want to get caught with a silly claim.

How much are you going to charge?

Ensure that you charge as much as to cover the cost of running the business, your salary and 20% for investment.

Hope these are useful! Note that we haven't put get an office, we think the first year is essential to settle and not spend more than what you need. In the future when things get more stable, we do recommend to get out of the house, and coworking is a great way to have your office... see our thoughts!
